About Four Seasons Garden Club of Kennett Square

Founded in 1958 and a proud member of the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania, District I since 1964, the Four Seasons Garden Club of Kennett Square is dedicated to fostering a love of gardening, floral design, horticulture, civic beautification, environmental conservation, and community outreach.

Our club welcomes anyone with a passion for learning and growing their knowledge. We meet on the first Wednesday evening of each month in Kennett Square, with Zoom meetings available during the winter months of January and February.

Our Roots

The Four Seasons Garden Club of Kennett Square began its journey on a Wednesday evening in February 1958, when members gathered at the Longwood Meeting House. With guidance from the Spade and Trowel Garden Club, our organization took root and began to flourish.

By 1959, the club had grown to 36 members. In 1960–61, our official by-laws were drafted and we became known as the Four Seasons Garden Club. That same year, we proudly joined the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania and took on the important role of staging the Kennett Flower Show.

Throughout the 1960s, our club continued to grow:

  • 1962–63: We formed our first Budget Committee and launched monthly mini flower shows, complete with schedules and rules.

  • 1964–65: Upon learning of another club with the same name, we adopted our official name: Four Seasons Garden Club of Kennett Square.

  • 1966–67: We began hosting and entertaining other local garden clubs.

  • 1969–70: A beloved tradition started—creating small Christmas floral arrangements for area seniors.

In the decades that followed, we expanded our civic engagement and beautification efforts:

  • 1981–83: A club representative joined the Kennett Square Conservation and Beautification Committee. We also launched our first Christmas greens sale.

  • 1989: Participated in our first Longwood Flower Show.

  • 1991: Planted the War of 1812 Memorial Traffic Island on Cypress Street.

  • 1994: Member Helen Reed established the Butterfly Garden at Anson B. Nixon Park, a cherished community space.

Recent years have brought both challenges and renewal:

  • 2020–2022: The COVID-19 pandemic shifted our meetings to Zoom and inspired creative new ways to stay connected. We also replanted the Helen Reed Butterfly Garden at Anson B. Nixon Park.

  • 2023: We proudly celebrated our 65th anniversary—a vibrant milestone in our club’s ongoing journey.
